Biography

Sean Coster has been passionate about running for the last 18 years. As an athlete he enjoyed competing in college at the Division I level. As a student his graduate thesis project applied his knowledge of exercise physiology to a software program enabling coaches to manage their athletes. As a coach he has enjoyed the success that beginners to national class athletes have achieved with his well rounded, individualized coaching programs. Sean’s unique ability to evaluate each runner’s physiological and psychological response to their training programs enables his athletes to get the most out of their ability. Sean is a member of the coaching staff at the Nike Sports center in Beaverton OR, has contributed writings to Runners World, Competitor Magazine and Race Center Northwest and holds a level I certification from USATF and a coaching accreditation with the Road Runners Club of America . Sean maintains a stable of runners from recreational runners to local elites.


Coaching Philosophy

Coaching can be the difference between struggling with injuries or mediocre performances and finding out how fast you can run. My personal coaching programs are available to runners of various abilities. Athletes must be self motivated and have specific goals they are striving to achieve with their running. As the name implies, I take a completely individual approach to the coaching process. We meet and discuss goals, past training experiences and the strengths and weaknesses you see in yourself. If our personalities are compatible and goals for you similar its a good match and I will build you a few weeks of training.

Personal coaching clients receive a monthly training program that is 100% custom designed. We meet 2x’s per month to work on your goals. These meetings can consist of strength and technique development, track workouts or goal setting sessions.

Lab Services

Aerobic Profile Test
  • Determines the lactate thresholds, aerobic capacity and efficiency for endurance runners.
  • $175.00
Max VO2 Test
  • Determines the aerobic capacity and anaerobic threshold for runners.
  • $150.00
Lactate Threshold Test
  • Determines the effort required to run at important sub-maximal speeds related to your goal event by measuring heart rate and the concentration of lactate in the blood.
  • $125.00 ($150.00 w/ optional gas exchange testing)
Heart Rate Monitor Set Up Test
  • Estimates the anaerobic threshold through a running test at various running speeds and observation of the heart rate dynamics.

Critical Speed Test
  • Combines two maximal steady state tests to establish the aerobic power profile.

Resting Metabolic Rate
  • Determines the rate and type of calories (fat v. carbohydrate) burned at rest.
